Gold unit converter: troy ounce, gram, tola and baht

Gold is priced per troy ounce, but it is bought and sold in grams, kilograms, tola and baht around the world. Converting with the wrong ounce is a common 10% mistake. This tool converts every unit at once and, if you enter a price, shows the value per gram and per tola.

Gold is quoted per troy ounce (31.1034768 g), not the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g). Mixing them up gives an error of about 10%. Prices here are pure-gold values from the price you type. Local retail prices include purity, dealer spread and premium, so they will differ.

How to use

  1. Enter an amount and pick its unit.
  2. Read the same weight in every other unit.
  3. Optionally enter the gold price in USD per troy ounce to see the pure-gold value and the price per gram and per tola.

Formula

1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g; 1 tola = 11.6638038 g; 1 Thai baht (gold bar) = 15.244 g; 1 avoirdupois oz = 28.349523125 g. Price per gram = price per troy oz ÷ 31.1034768

Example

At 2,000 USD per troy ounce, one gram of pure gold is 2,000 ÷ 31.1034768 ≈ 64.30 USD, and one tola (11.6638 g) is exactly 750 USD, because a tola is three eighths of a troy ounce. These are pure-gold values for illustration, not market data.

Hypothetical example to explain the formula. It is not real market data and not a trading recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tola?
A traditional South Asian unit of weight for gold, standardised as 11.6638038 grams, which is three eighths of a troy ounce.
Why does my local gold price differ from this calculation?
Retail prices include purity (for example 22 or 24 carat), the dealer's buy-sell spread, making charges and local premium or tax. This tool values pure gold at the price you enter.
Is a troy ounce the same as a normal ounce?
No. A troy ounce is about 31.10 grams and an avoirdupois ounce is about 28.35 grams. Gold prices use the troy ounce.
